Presentation of the course
OBJECTIVES
The goal of this course is to provide the students with the basics of solid state physics. Prerequisites of statistical physics and quantum theory are required and will be illustrated all along the lectures by means of practical examples.
The main models of electronic structure in periodic systems are exposed (Fermi free electron gas, nearly free electrons perturbation theory, tight-binding model) and illustrated by simple benchmark examples. Physics of lattice dynamics is also proposed together with the theory of Phonons in solids.

The PDF document entitled "A paper reading assignement" contains the instructions.
For this assignment you should form a group of three students. You should all
read all the titles and abstracts of the papers available on moodle. Then, collectively
decide the paper on which you would like to work in groups of three
students. The groups should be written in the shared file at the following link:https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1hQeKPjQ8QxLipflpZRjYuvHocTH4K2dodeSQQVt870E/edit?usp=sharing
The papers must be chose by May 15. There should be no more than
two groups per paper ! All students from the group should read the entire paper
that was chosen. Together, you should discuss it and write a 1-2 page (max 2
pages) (11pt Arial, single line spacing within a paragraph) report/summary of
the paper. All three names of the students should appear in the heading of the
report.Below is the list of papers for the paper reading assignement.
