This lecture provides an introduction to the physics of the solid state. The objectives are: (i) the description of the lattice vibrations (phonons) as well as (ii) the electronic structure of different types of solids: metals, semimetals, semi-conductors, and insulators. Different levels of description and basic concepts are discussed: the free electron gas model, concept of reciprocal lattice, Bloch theorem, quasi-free electron model, tight-binding model, electronic bands theory, thermal and conduction properties.
